Title sequences and conventions

What is a title sequence?
A title sequence is the beginning of the film. a good title sequence should do/be the following:

  • Suspend disbelief-when the viewer is 'transported' and for the duration of the film forgets it is not real.
  •  Sets the tone of the film/gives clues as to what is to come.
  • Establishes characters and plot.
  • A piece of art in itself.
  • Signifies contemporary art or modern pop.
  • Iconic and original.
  • Connect seamlessly into the film.
Examples of teen films:

TFIOS
Twilight
Harry Potter
White Chicks
Mean Girls
Wild Child
She's a man
Ill Manners
John Tucker must die
St Trinians
17 again
High school musical.

Conventions

Setting- school/street-urban environment.
Language- relevant to youths.
Plots- romance, fun, rebelliousness.
Characters- Teens/Youths, Adults (teachers,parents, law enforcers)

Institutions

People who own/produce a film.
Title sequence is an essential convention for the owner of the film.
Puts stamp on the film.
a) Conglomerate- Big budget and longer credits due to bigger cast and team
b)Independent- Small budget and short credits.
