Further inspiration for title sequences

I was looking on www.artofthetitle.com for further inspiration for our title sequence and how we can lay out our titles after seeing our completed draft. I saw this gravestone/monument with the name of the executive producer on it in the title sequence for Six Feet Under (2001) As we have a graveyard scene as our first scene I feel this is appropriate and would suit our title sequence. I think we should do something similar to this for our sequence as we have similar/appropriate shots to do this.

Putting together our draft piece

On Wednesday 25th February we created our draft copy of Deceptions' title sequence. We split our group in two and took on different tasks. Myself (Zahra) and Dilem chose the clips we wanted to use and put it in the right sequence according to our storyboard. This included cropping the clips in appropriate places in order to create match cuts, we also had to use steadycam and blur effects to add to the atmosphere and feel of the film, this added tension. Malachi and Ernestina worked on the soundtrack for our film this included tense music for the graveyard scene, and music for the rest of the sequence. We then had to put the film and the music together, and ensure they were in time with each other. Once we had done this we had to shrink the file through Handbreak in order to post our sequence on blogger.

Complete rough cut 1

A rough cut of the first scene was done and blogged then the second scene was edited and then the third. Afterwards we put the edited shots together and produced this.
editing tools used:
Some of our footage, specifically the graveyard had footage which was slightly shaky due to weather conditions. We smoothed this out with smoothcam, however it supposedly added to the effect of the filming.
blur to blur out the person's name on the gravestone
in the future cut we plan to sepia and distortion because it adds to the eerie effect and sets the atmosphere for the movie.

Branding

I created this title on Paint. I got the font design from http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/nexa-rust The 'T' i used is the twitter t. This gives some incite into our storyline as she meets shaun online, although in our story she actually meets him on facebook i think the concept is a good one and the t is easily recognisable by social media users, therefore it will draw in this audience. I chose this font as it is quite dark and mismatched which suggest our film is quite dark and sets the mood.

Updated storyboard

We made further changes to our storyboard after over coming problems that arose. This is therefore our edited and complete storyboard.

Filming update

We have now completed all our filming, the last of the filming was completed of Thursday 12th February. Dilem was filming and I was in front of the camera, we both directed for the scene. We had to make further changes to the scene due to problems with our laptop and creating the accounts on Facebook for our scene. Due to this we had to use our phones and use text message as a substitute for the Facebook chat. In our scene we got some over the shoulder shots to show her receiving the text messages, and some mid shots and high shots to establish scene and situation. In the scene our character, Sarah, was in the college canteen doing some work on the laptop when she receives a text from 'Shaun' the character she met from Facebook. We see them discuss meeting up through text message to establish what is going to happen.
Myself and Dilem had to come in during our free periods to film this scene, to ensure the canteen was as empty as possible so we would not be too much of an obstruction.

Meeting rough cut 1

A rough order of how are shots are organised
this order allows us to visualise how the shots will look and how to organise them orderly.

rough cut journey

This is an example of our rough cut draft 1
The shots are placed randomly and the shot doesn't look as organised. After evaluating our shots we thought of a more suitable and organised sequence for our shots and that will be shown in rough cut draft 2.

Changes to plan

Upon realising we cannot use dialogue in our title sequence we have had to make some changes. We now have to cut out our cafe scene as this mainly consists of dialogue. We have decided to change this to scenes of Sarah on the computer showing her online chat. This would consist of close up's of fingers typing, high shots from behind the computer, over the shoulder shots showing the computer screen and a low shot from under the computer. This would mean making a fake Facebook account to carry this chat out. We must ow redo our storyboard based upon this.
We have looked at some scenes from films with similar story lines to ours and sought inspiration from the following title sequences.

production diary and individual contribution

Production diary
on this day we achieved what we wanted to achieve and the scene came out the way we wanted except the fact that the filming was a bit shaky but it adds affect to the title and reflects theme.

the other scene didn't go as well as we wanted because we wanted to film in a house but we ended up filming at a cafe instead.

individual contribution

The first shot we filmed was at Abney park graveyard were Malachi and myself played the parents of main character.

for the scene where Sarah played by Zahra and Denise played Dilem meet up to talk about her situation. Malachi and I were filming. I was taking pictures of the scene and different angles for the animatic story board

Drafting of the story board

In the images displayed above we have displayed drafting skills as we completely changed the concept for one particular scene which was of Denise and Sarah conversing at Sarah's parent's house which has now been changed into them meeting up at a cafe and discussing there problems there.

Influences of titles

Titles that influenced our title ideas and credits
Our initial ideas were influenced by another group in the year above thriller title sequence that we viewed through Vimeo.

As we got into the titles and thinking deeper into it we used other independent films such as fish tank and my brother the devil.

Fish Tank
Is a good influence because the order of the titles and credits are well organised and it suites our theme and helped develop how we wanted our titles to come across have and how the main name stood out
and the simplicity of them

My brother the devil

I liked how the sequenced should images that reflected the themes of the movie and it was effective as moving images. I liked that it switched from still image to moving images of the characters introducing them to the audience.

Se7en was another one our influences because we liked the way it showed the journey of the main character and it reflects the theme of the movie

The blank page and scratchy writing helps reflect the theme of the movie to the audience given the movie a creepy feel

This image of the man writing in his journal links the character and the text in the sense that the title text is to connect the character to movie by them having the same text.

Changes to Production schedule

We were mean to go filming on Saturday 24th january but we ended up going on Wednesday 21st january owing to the fact that people weren't going to be free on the day we were meant to do it on. another reason why it was filmed earlier was because it made sense and the weather fitted well with the mood and our themes.

Filming update 3

On Wednesday 4th February we went to go and film our Cafe scene. This was originally meant to be a scene inside a home but we had to change this as we did not have a house available to us. We must now redo our storyboard based on this. We filmed at Angel Inn on Goswell Road, we first had to ask the cafe managers permission before doing this. We walked to the cafe from college and carried out our health and safety check- tweeting from our group twitter page and posting a picture. We had no problems whilst filming.

Health and Safety throughout production

As part of our health and safety component of production we have made a twitter page. On this twitter page we can quickly and conveniently post our location, pictures and updates as to where we are and what we're up to. This gives our teacher quick and easy access to this information.
We must post/update this every time we go filming.

Reflection on filming day - 28th February 2015

Reflection on filming day - 28th February 2015

On our Wednesday morning lesson we went to Abney Park Cemetery to film some of our scenes.  The scenes we aimed to film were the opening scenes when the mum and dad visit there daughters grave, this is a flashback and after this scene it goes into a scene where the daughter is alive. There are only two characters in the scene, the mum and dad. They both wore dark colours to connote sadness and depression.  We used a fig rig to film the scenes.
However, as we forgot to check the weather forecast, we had to cut our filming time short because it started to rain heavily and if we carried on filming the cameras and our equipment would get wet.

Overall it was a successful lesson as we managed to get all the scenes we needed to film, however next time we must be more prepared by checking the weather before hand.
